When Cloud Nine Hair approached us to take over the support and management of their e-commerce website, one of the key challenges they needed help with was improving the website's stability during busy periods of high traffic.
The Issues
Cloud Nine Hair were facing a significant challenge with their website's performance, particularly during periods of moderate to high traffic. As visitor numbers grew, the site struggled to keep up, often crashing, leading to frustration for both the business and its customers.
The annual Black Friday sale, historically one of the busiest shopping days of the year, had become a real concern, as the site’s inability to cope with the traffic had led to recurring downtime in previous years. This was impacting both sales and customer experience.
This persistent issue highlighted the need for a robust solution to ensure the site could reliably handle traffic spikes without compromising speed or uptime.
The Solution
We began by conducting load testing to establish a baseline for how many simultaneous sales the system could handle. Using NewRelic for in-depth profiling, we identified several performance bottlenecks. Based on these insights, we restructured the hosting architecture and optimised the resource allocation.
Additionally, we fine-tuned the e-commerce system to address the key pressure points revealed during profiling, resulting in a more stable and efficient platform.

The Results
After restructuring the server infrastructure, the results were nothing short of remarkable, allowing 17x the amount of processes. Black Friday, previously a day of concern due to the site frequently crashing, became uneventful. The website remained stable throughout the day, handling increased traffic levels compared to previous years.
This resulted in a new record number of sales and total revenue being taken in a single day. The whole team was thrilled with the outcome, not only had the site performed seamlessly, but we also saved a whopping $29,000 a year on hosting costs as the client had been overpaying for unnecessary resources.
