Supporting global growth with a custom booking engine and website combination. Enabling Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) to expand with seven offices around the world. Our systems processing and generating revenue in the hundreds of millions.
Project Overview
Late in 2011, we were asked to reproduce an online booking engine for Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV). This was launched in January of 2012. During the first year of the new booking engine, online sales doubled from the previous year. At the time, CMV were a UK-based cruise line with sailing solely from the UK with two ships. They had only been operating for a year when we got involved.
A year after replacing their booking system, we also replaced the marketing website, followed later by a booking management portal.
In the following nine years, we supported their rapid growth, quickly moving to operate in seven countries in total, the main sales office remaining in the UK.
Over this time, not only did we support growth via the technology we built and launched on behalf of CMV, but we also became their technology consultants, making processes more efficient, enabling expansion in revenue and throughput whilst minimising administrative and manpower costs.
Unfortunately, CMV were a victim of the 2020 lockdowns. The pandemic came at the worst possible time for CMV - just after a finance deal was agreed to acquire two more ships.
Up until this point, Castus’ impact had been significant, with every booking and element of shoreside revenue going through a system that had been built bespoke for CMV. The trust between the two companies was solidified, with CMV buying shares in Castus and one of our Directors (Gary Hides) becoming the IT Director of all Shoreside technology for CMV.
“It's no exaggeration to say that Castus have transformed our online systems and made a real difference to our growth. I can't recommend them enough.”

Director
What did we do?
Because we worked with CMV over 9 years and supported them through growth of online revenues that increased by a multiple of 13.3x over that period alongside moving from operating in a single country to 7 countries, it is hard to put into words everything we did for CMV.
It wasn’t just a single project or a single goal. So, what exactly did we do?
Enabled business growth implementation using technology - at speed!
Not only did we launch our first custom-built booking engine for CMV UK in January of 2012, but we also launched the CMV USA system 4 months later in May 2012. In 2013, expansion was made in to both Australia and Germany. Only 5 months apart. Australia launching in February and Germany in July.
In each of these cases we only had a short time scale in which to react - at the most around 2 months. We understand that often in business you have to move fast. We were with CMV on that journey and pulled out all of the stops to move as fast as they needed in order expand quickly and take the opportunities afforded to them.

Scaled technology requirements to meet the demand of a global business
When going from operating in one country to seven, and from 12k daily page views to 55k that are spread geographically around the world, you really need to consider who you are going to manage that tech stack. This is what we did for CMV.
Castus built a system to synchronise bookings for all of the customer-facing systems that we managed. This ensured the cabin stock that was available to book was correct for both the internal teams and the third-party travel agents and system integrators. We also helped go paperless for the new offices around the world, reducing admin burden and cost for postal tickets and invoices.
Managed all customer facing technology needs
After we had proved our technical ability, trustworthiness and a reliable positive ROI, CMV asked Castus to take on more and more responsibility with regards to the overall tech stack. One of our Directors, Gary Hides, was asked to join the leadership team at CMV and managed an internal team for CMV, helping reshape much of the IT vision. This resulted in a much more efficient workforce and working practices, enabling scale without huge extra costs.
With the headache of technology being looked after, the senior leaders at CMV were then able to concentrate on the work they had to do in order to grow the business - having confidence they were ably supported for whichever direction or opportunity arose.
The Results
Some key results from the years spent working with CMV:
13.3x
Growth in online revenue
4x
Annual page view increase
7
Interconnected systems globally, all with localised rules
20m
Annual page views, with content being served across the world

What this case study tells you about Castus
In everything we do, trust is key. For CMV, we not only provided the technology to help their growth journey, but we ended up being the trusted advisors with regard to their booking systems and websites.
These elements were a huge part of their journey. Until you have been on the physical cruise ship, all you know about the company you are booking a holiday with is through your interactions with them - often that means your interactions through the marketing web site, then the booking journey and anything that follows - such as the booking management to add on extras like excursions, drinks packages or complete the travel information required (health and passport info).
Bearing in mind, this is usually a large part of anyone’s annual expenditure - the money spent on a holiday.
After spending the first few years working together, showing our delivery capability and trust to deliver within budget, being shown time and time again, our relationship grew stronger with Castus being asked to take on more direct responsibility for the direction of travel for the technology used.
All of this culminated in Gary Hides, one of our Directors, being asked to be IT Director for CMV, and through that trusted relationship, later asked to be Chief Technology Officer of Ambassador Cruise Line. A new start-up, post-COVID pandemic, that shared some of the senior leadership from Cruise & Maritime Voyages.
