My Student Halls is the UK’s leading search engine for student accommodation. Our relationship with mystudenthalls.com started over a decade ago, as we were brought onboard to redesign and rebuild the site. Since then, we have continued to maintain, refine, and enhance the platform, ensuring it stays ahead of the competition.

The Brief
With a commitment to continuous improvement, we set out to refresh the design of My Student Halls and identify opportunities to further enhance the user experience.
Being the industry leader and a high-performing site, our focus wasn't to throw away what already existed, but to build on the success of the site and make incremental changes that would keep us ahead of the competition.
Whatever changes we would look to implement, maintaining the site's lightning-fast performance was non-negotiable. In fact, one of our core goals was to improve these where possible and achieve a 'Good' score across all pages on Google’s Core Web Vitals (CWV).
The Approach
To start, we set about identifying areas of friction within the existing user journeys. User testing was the method we adopted to gather meaningful insights into how users were interacting with the site. By setting real scenarios that reflected how actual students interact with the site, we were able to observe their behaviour first-hand and identify the specific barriers users encountered. Although there wasn't any 'low-hanging fruit' on the site, we were able to identify a number of small issues, which, once addressed, add up to meaningful changes.
Once we had a clear picture of the pain points, we set about exploring different solutions. This involved exploring a wide range of ideas, building them out into working prototypes, and testing each one with real users. If a concept didn’t perform as expected, we investigated to see why, and if needed, we scrapped it. If a solution shows potential, we refine it and test it again.
This process allowed us to validate every change before implementation, ensuring each change was backed by evidence and genuinely enhanced the user experience.

The Results
We are thrilled with the results that have been achieved following the redesign. We have seen a clear boost in engagement, resulting in the number of leads generated through the site increasing by 71% in the first 6 months post-launch.
We achieved our goal of excellent Core Web Vitals, delivering exceptional results across desktop and mobile. This was a real focus for us, with organic search being so important, ensuring we 'ticked' these boxes was at the top of our priority list.
While this redesign has been a success and has delivered great results, our work doesn't stop here. We will continue to work closely with the team at My Student Halls, looking for new opportunities to enhance the site and keep pushing for ongoing growth.
